Funerals

When a loved one has passed either the family or the funeral home can call the parish office at 703.356.1255 to discuss funeral arrangements. When talking with one of our priests the nature of the funeral service would be discussed (Funeral Mass, Memorial Service) and we can look at the church calendar to schedule it. If available, Flaherty Hall is available for parishioners to host a reception after the funeral.

 

The family works with the priest to discuss and finalize the readings for the service. Our music director, Michael Cedrone, will be available to help with the choice of music for the service and he will engage a cantor.

Office staff will prepare a simple program for the funeral and if holding a reception, will work with you regarding the set up for the Hall and possible catering choices. We are only able to provide the tables, chairs and paper table coverings.

Funeral Readings

Below is an attachment that contains the readings for the Funeral Mass.

The family should select one Old Testament Reading (A section, or during the Easter season, AA section),

one New Testament Reading (B section),

and a Gospel (C section).

A family member may read the Old Testament reading,

and a second person the New Testament Reading.

The Gospel is always read by the presiding priest.

The second attachment contains the Responsorial Psalms. One of the psalms may be selected. The cantor always leads the singing of the Psalm.

Music for Funerals

Please consult with the Director of Music, Michael Cedrone, to discuss your music choices.

For a funeral or memorial Mass, families may choose one piece of music for each of the following times:

  • Entrance Hymn
  • Music during the Preparation of the Gifts
    (this may be a hymn, a vocal solo, or an instrumental selection)
  • Communion Hymn
  • Closing Hymn

It’s best to think of music that was significant to your loved one and is likely to be familiar to your family and to others you expect to attend the Mass.
